Exhibit Description
There is something about working with tactile mediums that makes me want to keep looking at the piece once it is finished. The process of hands-on work makes the experience more emerging and meaningful, while the materials make me think of home. Working with joint compound helps show the movement of how the piece was created and keeps the eye moving with every stroke as well as looking deeper into the piece. The other material used to make the base of most of the pieces is wood. Growing up, my family and I would stop and visit my uncle and dad at various job sites that they would be working at. I associate those memories with the joint compound. The wood reminds me of my grandpa. Growing up if ever needed something built out of wood he would try and make it for you.
While working on this body of work I went through a time where I was struggling with my faith. These pieces taught me a lot about patience and waiting when it comes to the final work as well as a person's walk in faith. Every little step is important as well as the waiting time in between. The final work is something a person is able to look back on and be able to see everything underneath that is not just the face of the artwork.
